Salah sets Liverpool record with strike against Man City

Mohamed Salah made history with his 17th-minute strike in the Premier League early kick-off tie between Manchester City and Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

The Egyptian forward fired a ferocious left-footed strike past City’s goalkeeper Ederson after an excellent hold-up play from Portuguese forward Diogo Jota.

The goal was his fourth against the Citizens this season, and he became the first Liverpool player in history to score against Manchester City in four games in the same season. The strike was also his 56th away goal, making him the Liverpool player with the most goals away from home in the Premier League.

Salah was on the scoresheet in the Reds 3-1 win over Pep Guardiola’s men in the Community Shield in July 2022 before scoring the only goal in Liverpool’s 1-0 win over City at Anfield in October 2022. He also found the back of the net in their 3-2 loss to the same team in the Round of 16 of the Carabao Cup last December.

The former Chelsea forward has now scored 11 goals against City, tying Liverpool legends Gordon Hodgson and Sir Kenny Dalglish for the second most goals against the six-time Premier League winners, and he is four behind Ian Rush (15).

The 30-year-old also ties Rush as the only Liverpool players to score in four different games against an opponent in a single campaign, with the latter doing so in five outings against Merseyside rivals Everton in the 1986-87 season.
