Ruben Amorim dismissed as Manchester United head coach

Amorim prepared to cope with depleted Man United squad

Ruben Amorim has been dismissed from his position as head coach of Manchester United, Afrosport reports.

His final game in charge was the 1-1 draw against Leeds United on Sunday and leaves the club sixth in the Premier League, three points away from the top four.

After the game at Elland Road, Amorim hinted at differences with the club hierarchy and vowed to remain in charge until the end of his initial 18-month contract which was signed in November 2024 when he joined from Sporting Lisbon and replaced Erik Ten Hag.

“I know that my name is not [Thomas] Tuchel, it’s not [Antonio] Conte, it’s not [Jose] Mourinho, but I’m the manager of Manchester United,” he said.

“It’s going to be like this for 18 months or when the board decides to change.

“I just want to say that I’m going to be the manager of this team, not just the coach. And I was really clear on that.

“And that is going to finish in 18 months, and then everyone is going to move on. That was the deal. That is my job, not to be a coach.”

The club in statement on Monday said: “Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United.

“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.

“The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.”

United finished a low 15th during the 2024-25 season with 42 points, their lowest since 1974. They also reached the Europa League final but lost to Tottenham Hotspur.

Former United midfielder and current Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher will take charge on an interim basis until a permanent manager is found, with his first game away at Burnley on Wednesday.
