Ronaldo awarded Guinness World Record after reaching milestone

Cristiano Ronaldo has been awarded with a Guinness World Record as he became the first player in men’s football to earn 200 international caps.

The 38-year-old superstar achieved this feat in Portugal’s 1-0 win over Iceland in the Euro 2024 qualifiers on Tuesday.

The Al-Nassr forward also scored the only goal of the game in the 89th minute to continue Portugal’s 100% start to life under new manager Roberto Martinez.

Ronaldo already led for most caps in men’s football after overtaking Kuwaiti forward Bader Al-Mutawa who is still active and has 196 caps but no player had ever reached 200 caps as recognised by global football governing body FIFA.

Former Malaysia centre-back Soh Chin Ann held the record for most caps (195) which he earned between 1969 and 1984. Al-Mutawa however overtook in 2022 before Ronaldo did so.

Ronaldo is also the player with most international goals in men’s football, with his strike against Iceland being the 123rd of an illustrious career for both club and country.
