Roma boss Mourinho handed two-game suspension

AS Roma manager, Jose Mourinho, has been handed a two-match ban from the touchline after entering the referee’s dressing room in the Giallorossi’s 2-1 Serie A at Cremonese on Tuesday.

The 60-year-old tactician was given a red card, his third this season, and sent to the stands after an altercation with fourth official Marco Serra. Still incensed, Mourinho proceeded to the referee’s dressing room after the final whistle to show his grievances to the match officials which is usually off limits to club personnel.

Lega Serie A, the Italian top-flight organizing body, responded by handing the former Tottenham Hotspur manager a fine of €10,000 for his unsportsmanlike conduct and hitting him with bans that will see him miss home ties against Juventus and Sassuolo.

The Portuguese manager’s frustrations came as Cremonese recorded their first Serie A win of the season after 24 games, and he [Mourinho] had stated after the match he could take up legal action against Serra, a move that would be unprecedented.

“I am emotional, but not crazy. In order to react the way I did, something had to happen first. I need to understand if I can take any legal action,” an enraged Mourinho told DAZN.

“Piccinini gave me a red card, because unfortunately the fourth official does not have the capacity to understand what he said to me.

“I want to find out if there is an audio recording. I don’t want to get into the fact that Serra is from Turin and on Sunday we are playing against Juventus.”

Roma’s defeat to Le Tigri was their sixth in Serie A this season, and it prevented them from leapfrogging their fierce city rivals Lazio into the fourth spot on the table as they continue their chase for a return to the UEFA Champions League.
