Players in Serie A teams that are relegated will have their salaries cut by 25% under a new collective bargaining agreement between the Italian top flight and the Italian Footballers’ Association, Afrosport reports.
The new agreement, which will be in place for the next five years, is aimed at relieving the financial burden on clubs that face relegation from Serie A to Serie B, and will apply to contracts signed after the summer transfer window closes on September 2.
Existing contracts will however remain unaffected.
Should the teams earn promotion back to the Serie A, the salary of players will revert to the original value.
The agreement also puts in place a salary cap based on a player’s age, which cannot be lowered in the event of relegation.
The 2024-25 Serie A season saw Empoli, Venezia and Monza relegated while Cremonese, Pisa and Sassuolo gained promotion from Serie B for the upcoming top-flight campaign, which commences on August 23.
