Real Madrid fined for homophobic chants towards Pep Guardiola

Real Madrid has been fined by UEFA following homophobic chants directed towards Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola by their fans, Afrosport reports.

The La Liga champions have been ordered by European football’s governing body to pay a fine of 30,000 euros.

They were also given a partial stadium closure and must shut off at least 500 adjacent seats during their next European match at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The partial closure, however, has been suspended for two years, UEFA said.

The homophobic chants happened during Real Madrid’s 3-1 home win against City in the second leg of their Champions League play-off on 19 February. The result helped Los Blancos progress to the Champions League last 16 with a 6-3 aggregate win.

They will face Atletico Madrid in the competition next. Carlo Ancelotti’s men, second in La Liga behind Barcelona, will take on Real Betis in the league on Saturday.
