Real Madrid complete €50 million signing of Alvaro Carreras from Benfica

Real Madrid have completed the signing of Spanish left-back Alvaro Carreras from Benfica on a six-year deal worth €50 million, Afrosport reports.

The 22-year-old is the fourth summer signing for Los Blancos under new manager Xabi Alonso after Dean Huijsen, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Franco Mastantuono, and will compete with Fran Garcia and Ferland Mendy for a place in the starting XI.

Carreras was previously a youth player with Madrid between 2017 and 2020 before joining Manchester United.

He however failed to nail a spot in the first team at Old Trafford after loan spells at Preston North End, Granada and Benfica, and was sold to the latter for just €6 million last May.

He became a regular face for Benfica in the 2024-25 season, making 52 appearances in all competitions, scoring four goals and providing five assists, as the Lisbon giants finished runners-up in Liga Portugal and reached the round of 16 at the just-concluded FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.

Carreras has a 20% sell-on clause when he was sold from United to Benfica, meaning the Red Devils could see a €10 million profit off his sale to Madrid.
