Rashford ties 10-year Man Utd record against Chelsea

Marcus Rashford’s strike in Manchester United’s 4-1 win over Chelsea on Thursday night tied a 10-year club record as he became the first Red Devils player to score at least 30 goals in a season since Robin Van Persie did so in the 2012/13 campaign.

The 25-year-old, who has missed United’s last two games due to injury and illness, came off the bench in his side’s penultimate game of the season, replacing the injured Antony just before the half-hour mark.

It took him, however, a while to get on the scoresheet, as his 78th-minute strike completed United’s four-goal haul against the Blues. Bruno Fernandes capitalized on an error by Wesley Fofana before teeing up the United graduate, whose first effort did not beat Kepa Arrizabalaga in goal for Chelsea, but he was on hand to tap in the rebound.

The striker took his season tally in the Premier League to 17 goals, tying his best-ever return in the league after he did so in the 2019–20 season.

Rashford, who also scored six goals each in the Europa League and Carabao Cup and one in the FA Cup, became the 12th player in the history of Manchester United to reach the 30-goal mark.

His 30 goals this season by far outweigh any other season since he made his United debut in the 2015-16 campaign, beating his previous high of 22 goals in all competitions, which he got in the 2019/20 season.

With the Red Devils still having two games to end the season—in the league against Fulham and the FA Cup final against Manchester City—the Three Lions forward could still add to his season tally.
