Premier League Roundup: Arsenal beat Man Utd as Amorim suffers first defeat

The clash of titans between Arsenal and Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night ended in a 2-0 win for the Gunners, who despite the victory, dropped into third in the Premier League standings, Afrosport reports.

Mikel Arteta’s side were unable to unlock a very resolute United defence, with the visitors almost leaping in front but Diogo Dalot’s low strike just flew past the far post.

Arsenal trouble throughout the game with their set piece routines and it eventually bore fruit when Dutch defender Jurrien Timber leapt highest in the 54th minute to head home a corner kick from Declan Rice to give the hosts the lead.

The Gunners almost got a second, once again from a Rice corner but the resulting header from United forward Joshua Zirkzee was cleared off the like by Manuel Ugarte, who saved his teammate from scoring an own goal.

The North London side, however, will not be denied for long as French defender William Saliba doubled his side lead. Another corner kick was met at the far post by Thomas Partey, whose header hit Saliba’s backside and found it’s way into the United goal.

The result meant Arsenal are currently on a four-game winning run against United, who lost for the first time under new boss Ruben Amorim and dropped to 11th in the Premier League standings.

Elsewhere, league leaders Liverpool were held to a 3-3 draw by Newcastle United in an enthralling six-goal thriller at St. James Park.

Swiss defender Fabian Schar profited off an error from Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher to earn the Magpies, who also got goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon, a point, while Mohamed Salah bagged a brace and Curtis Jones scored another for the visitors.

At St. Mary’s Stadium, 10-man Southampton were thrashed 5-1 by in-form Chelsea, who moved aboard Arsenal and into second place in the table thanks to a superior goal difference.

Axel Disasi, Christopher Nkunku, Noni Madueke, Cole Palmer and Jason Sancho were all on the score sheet for the scorching Blues, while Nigeria international Joe Aribo was the scorer of Southampton’s only goal.

Meanwhile, champions Manchester City put an end to their seven-game winless run with a much-needed 3-0 win against Nottingham Forest courtesy of goals from Bernardo Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and Jeremy Doku.

City temporarily moved into fourth place having picked up their first win in five Premier League matches.

Wednesday’s other results saw Aston Villa return to winning ways with a 3-1 victory over Brentford, while Ashley Young, who became Everton’s oldest ever goalscorer, set a number of other records as the Toffees comfortably saw off Wolverhamton Wanderers 4-0 at Goodison Park.
