Premier League: Nwaneri in contention for first Arsenal start against Liverpool

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has stated that Ethan Nwaneri is in contention for his first-ever Premier League start in Sunday’s highly-anticipated clash with Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium, Afrosport reports.

The 17-year-old England attacker of Nigerian heritage has been a regular name in the Gunners’ matchday squad this season but has been more of an unused substitute with just 18 combined minutes of action in three league cameos.

Arteta is however having to deal with injuries problems with the likes of Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka likely to miss out, and this presents Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly with the possibility of making the starting XI against the Reds.

“They are in contention. They give us the option to start the game,” the Spaniard ahead of the game.

“Myles came on the other night and did really well, Ethan the same. They are first-team players and we treat and value them the same as any other player.

“They don’t fear much and that is something really positive. They create an energy.”

Arsenal lost for the first time in the league this season against Bournemouth last week, finishing with 10 men.

It dropped them down to third in the standings, four points behind Liverpool.
