Potter leaves Chelsea after Aston Villa loss

Chelsea have confirmed the departure of Graham Potter as their head coach on Sunday.

His dismissal comes on the back of the Blues’ 2-0 home defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday that pushed them down to 12 points behind UEFA Champions League qualifying zone.

Potter leaves Stamford Bridge, seven months after he was appointed as successor to Thomas Tuchel in September.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion manager endured a poor run of results with the Blues, winning just seven of his 22 Premier League matches with the club languishing in the bottom-half of the table.

Former Brighton defender Bruno Saltor will stand in as interim coach and he will be tasked to lead Chelsea when they take on Liverpool in a Premier League fixture on Tuesday.

“Chelsea FC has announced that Graham Potter has departed the club. Graham has agreed to collaborate with the Club to facilitate a smooth transition,” the club statement read.

“In his time with the club, Graham has taken us to the quarter final of the Champions League, where we will face Real Madrid. Chelsea would like to thank Graham for all his efforts and contribution and wish him well for the future.”
