Police drop all charges against Man Utd striker Greenwood

Club World Cup: Al Ahly thump Auckland City in first round

Manchester United attacker Mason Greenwood has had all charges levelled against him discontinued.

Greater Manchester Police declared today that criminal proceedings against the 21-year-old have been dropped.

The Three Lions striker was charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault, allegations relating to the same woman.

The investigation commenced over a year ago, in January 2022, with a trial date initially set for November 27.

Greater Manchester Police announced: “Criminal proceedings against a 21-year-old man in connection with an investigation opened in January 2022 have, today (Thursday February 2 2023), been discontinued by the Crown Prosecution Service [CPS].”

GMP’s head of public protection, Chief superintendent Michaela Kerr also added: “Given the significant media coverage of this case, it is only fair that we share the news that the 21-year-old man, who had been arrested and charged in connection with an investigation opened in January 2022, no longer faces criminal proceedings in relation to this.”

“The investigation team has remained in regular contact with the legal team, providing any updates of note, and so understand the rationale for the discontinuation of proceedings at this stage, and that this decision has not been taken lightly.

“Despite the media and public’s interest in this case, we have decided not to comment on it in any further detail.”

The academy graduate has not featured for the Red Devils in over a year following his indefinite suspension by the club after images and videos of his alleged assault was made available publicly.

Greenwood last played for United on January 22, 2022, in a 1-0 win over West Ham at Old Trafford. The forward had six goals and two assists in 24 appearances for Manchester United in the 2021-22 season.

As at the time of filing this report, the Red Devils are yet to comment on this development and as such, Greenwood remains suspended by the club.
