PL: Iheanacho nominated for February POTM

Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho has been nominated for the Premier League Player of the Month for February alongside five other players.

The 26-year-old had a hand in five goals for Leicester City during the month, which came in the Foxes’ two victories against Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur.

The Nigerian international scored and provided two assists for James Maddison and Brazilian winger Tete in the 4-2 win at Villa Park before netting another goal and adding one assist for Maddison again in the 4-1 bashing of Spurs at the King Power Stadium.

The five-goal involvements were Iheanacho’s first in the top flight this season since September, when he scored in a 5-2 defeat by Brighton & Hove Albion. It adds to the three goals he has scored in the FA Cup, bringing his overall tally to six goals and four assists in all competitions.

The former Manchester City forward’s nomination comes as he began to see regular game time in the second half of the season after being frozen out for large parts of the first half of the campaign.

He would however have stern competition from other nominees for the February award, which include Manchester United sensation Marcus Rashford ( 5 goals), Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno (3 clean sheets and 11 saves), Tottenham full-back Emerson Royal (one goal and 3 clean sheets), Fulham attacker Manor Solomon (3 goals), and Villa forward Ollie Watkins (4 goals).

For the Manager of the Month Award, Red Devils’ manager Erik ten Hag, Fulham’s Marco Silva and Tottenham’s Antonio Conte are the nominees.

 

For Goal of the Month, efforts by Ghana and Crystal Palace midfielder Jeffrey Schlupp as well as Senegal and Leicester midfielder Nampalys Mendy, against Man United and Tottenham respectively, were nominated alongside strikes by six other players that include Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne and Fulham’s Willian.
