The Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) have began discussions with Chelsea over the treatment towards Raheem Sterling and Axel Disasi who have been frozen out of the first team, Afrosport reports.
The England winger and French defender have been deemed surplus to requirements by head coach Enzo Maresca and have been training alone away from the first team and also the academy squads.
Former Aston Villa forward Gabby Agbonlahor, called on the PFA to intervene in the matter after expressing concern it could talk a toll on the player’s mental health.
The PFA wants to ensure that Sterling and Disasi can train at an optimum level even if they are not part of the first team.
World football governing body FIFA has regulations in place that protect players isolated from squads in circumstances that could be considered abusive conduct by the concerned club.
The regulations make provision for the player to terminate his contract with a case of ‘just cause’, and according to BBC Sport, the PFA are seeking to ensure clubs are aware of these FIFA provisions.
Sterling has a contract with Chelsea until 2027 worth a reported £325,000-per-week, while Disasi’s contract runs until 2029 and earns around £80,000 per week.
Both players spent time on loan at Arsenal and Aston Villa respectively last season but were unable to find a move during the summer transfer window which shut on September 1.
