Paris 2024: Waldrum upbeat about Super Falcons’ slim qualification chance

Super Falcons coach Randy Waldrum is upbeat about his team’s chances of qualifying for the knockout phase at the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics.

The Nigerian ladies are yet to win a game in Group C after narrow losses to Brazil and world champions Spain.

The Falcons will need to defeat Japan by at least three unreplied goals in their final group game against Japan on Wednesday while hoping Brazil does not pick up any points against already-qualified Spain.

They could also qualify as one of the best-third placed teams if Canada and Australia fail to pick points in their games against the United States and Colombia.

“The way the matches had gone, we still needed a result against Japan and had the chance of going through, so whether we lose or we draw, we still had the opportunity,” Waldrum stated.

“I think if we beat Japan depending on what happens in Canada’s group since they have got six points.”

The Super Falcons are making their fourth Olympic appearance and have only managed to reach the knockout phase just once during the 2004 games in Athens where they were beaten by eventual bronze medallists Germany.
