American gymnast Simone Biles has reclaimed her spot at the apex of Olympic women’s gymnastics following her historic performance at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Thursday.
Biles clinched the gold medal in the Artistic Gymnastics women’s all-around final for the second time in her Olympic career, becoming the first American gymnast to win two golds for the all-around event.
The legendary Team USA star landed a 15.066 in the floor exercise in one of the most intense displays of her illustrious and trophy-laden career, as she finished in the top spot by a margin of 1.100 points.
The American beat Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade, who delivered a 14.033 in the floor exercise to finish second and secure the silver medal, while her compatriot Suni Lee, the gold medalist in the event in Tokyo 2020, took home bronze after landing a score of 13.666 in her floor routine.
Biles’ display further etched her name in the annals of Olympic greatness as she became the first gymnast since 1968 to win two gold medals in the all-around event, having initially won it at the Rio 2016 Games.
The 27-year-old also became the oldest all-around champion in 72 years and the sixth consecutive gymnast from the United States to win the all-around gold medal, a record that began in 2004.
Biles took her Olympic gold medal haul to six, a U.S. record for either a male or female gymnast. She also extended her individual record in the Olympics to nine total medals.
