Paris 2024: Ofili misses out on podium as USA’s Thomas wins women’s 200m final

Nigeria’s Favour Ofili was unable to claim a medal in the final of the women’s 200-metre race on Wednesday, with United States’ Gabby Thomas clinching the gold medal in a leading time of 21.83 seconds at Stade de France.

Having won bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Games, Thomas sauntered across the finish line to claim her first-ever Olympic gold medal, ahead of 100m champion Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia, who finished in second place in 22.08s. American Brittany Brown takes the bronze medal in 22.20s.

Ofili clocked a time of 22.24s to finish sixth, behind the Great Britain pair of Dina Asher-Smith (22.22s) and Daryll Neita (22.23s). The Nigerian will now turn her attention to the 4x100m relay which commences on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Thomas, 27, claimed her third Olympic medal, as she became the first American woman to win gold in this event since the legendary Allyson Felix in the London 2012 Games.

Her victory continues the United States’ dominance in the track-and field, where they have won five gold medals, at least three more than any other country. Summarily, the U.S. has claimed 16 track-and-field medals so far, while Kenya and Jamaica are joint-second with four each overall.
