Osimhen wins Serie A Golden Boot, breaks 125-year record

Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen scored the first goal as Napoli defeated already-relegated Sampdoria 2-0 at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium on Sunday to finish as the Serie A top scorer for the 2022–23 season.

The Nigerian won and converted a penalty in the 64th minute to end the campaign with 26 league goals and claim the Capocannoniere award for the first time since he moved to Italy.

The 24-year-old became the first African player to win the award in Serie A’s 125-year history, a record that caps off his excellently phenomenal season.

The strike also took Osimhen’s league tally for the year to 17 goals, the most of any player across the top-five European leagues and tied with Alexandre Lacazette and Harry Kane.

The Partenopei, who have already been crowned champions of Italy, concluded the season with a well-deserved win that was confirmed by a wonderful strike from substitute Giovanni Simeone.

The win was Napoli’s 28th of the season, four more than they managed last season, and it ensured they finished with 90 points, eleven more than last season, for their second-best performance after finishing with 91 points in the 2017-18 season.
