Victor Osimhen scored the 100th goal of his club career from the penalty spot as reigning Serie A champions Napoli secured a 2-0 win over Sassuolo on Sunday.
The Nigeria international opened his account for the 2023-24 season with a brace against Frosinone last time out. He was officially awarded with the Capocannoniere as last season’s top scorer in the Partenopei’s first game at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona and gave his team the lead against the Neroverdi in the 16th minute via a penalty after Matteo Politano was brought down in the box.
It was the 24-year-old’s 100th goal in his 193rd club appearance, joining Nigerian legends such as Rashidi Yekini, Obafemi Martins, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Nwankwo Kanu, Victor Ikepba, Osaze Odemwingie, Odion Ighalo among others to reach such milestone.
The second half began on a bad note for Sassuolo after French midfielder Maxime Lopez was given a straight red card for dissent in the 51st minute.
Giacomo Raspadori had the opportunity to also score from the penalty spot on the hour mark but he missed by playing his spot kick wide.
Napoli’s lead was doubled in the 64th when substitute Khvicha Kvaratskhelia fed Giovanni Di Lorenzo with a fine pass to allow the skipper finish off with aplomb.
