Osimhen returns to scoring ways in Serie A

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen picked up from where he left off before the winter break by scoring the opener in Napoli’s 2-0 win over Sampdoria at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium.

After firing blanks against Inter Milan in the midweek, the 24-year-old bagged his 10th Serie A goal of the season in the 19th minute, thanks to a sublime pass from leftback Mario Rui after some excellent teamwork.

Three minutes before the opening goal, Osimhen was close to finding the back of the net with a fine header, but Emil Audero in goal for Sampdoria pulled off a fantastic save.

Napoli got their second of the match from the penalty spot in the 82nd minute, after referee Rosario Abisso was called to review a handball incident in the area.

Following a lengthy jostle for the possible taker, midfielder Eljif Elmas tucked away the kick to seal all three points for the Partenopei.

Osimhen continues his push for the Capocannoniere award, as he currently leads the Serie A goalscoring chart and he is the first player to reach double digits in goals this season in the Italian top league.

The Super Eagles star managed 14 goals in 27 games last campaign and he is on course to set a new career-high barring injuries.

Napoli extend their lead at the top of the table to seven points, with 44 points from 17 games, and will need the relentless effort of the Nigerian striker if they are to fulfil their goal of winning the scudetto, their third ever and first in 33 years.
