Orban nominated for Gent’s Player of the Year award

Nigerian forward Gift Orban has been nominated for Gent’s Player of the Season award.

The 20-year-old is one of five nominees who have been shortlisted for the award, which was released on their Twitter handle on Tuesday.

Orban has been a revelation for the Belgian side since he joined in February; he has 20 goals and two assists in 20 games for Gent this season, including nine goals in 10 league games.

The prolific forward was influential in helping Gent secure a berth in next season’s Europa Conference League.

The Nigerian, who recently finished third in the 2023 Ebony Shoe award won by Belgian-born Burundian midfielder Mike Tresor Ndayishimiye, is the leading man for the accolade. If he wins the award, it would make it back-to-back wins for African players in Gent after Moroccan forward Tarik Tissoudali won it in the 2021-22 season.

Gent fans have until May 28 to cast their votes for the Player of the Season, and the winner of the award will be announced on Sunday, June 3, and will subsequently be presented with the Jean-Claude Bouvy trophy.
