Onana: Ten Hag rates Man United goalkeeper as Premier League’s second best goalkeeper

Onana: Ten Hag defends Cameroon goalkeeper despite questionable Man United form

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has rated Andre Onana as the second best goalkeeper in the Premier League based on statistics.

The Cameroon international has come under fire once again after being culpable for two conceded goals in United’s 3-3 draw at Galatasaray on Wednesday which leaves their qualification hopes to the knockout phase hanging in the balance.

Regardless of the setback, Ten Hag rates Onana highly, using his expected goals prevented stats in the Premier League, which is joint second best with Liverpool’s Alisson (+3.4) and only behind Luton Town’s Thomas Kaminski (+4.5).

“If you analyse it, well then you see he is the second-best goalkeeper in the Premier League based on stats,” Ten Hag said ahead of United’s Premier League trip to Newcastle United.

“His expected goals prevented is the second-best in the Premier League.

“He’s doing well. He knows that in the Champions League he has made some mistakes but, overall, in the first five months he has done well.”

Meanwhile, Anglo-Ghanaian midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has been receiving praise from fans since impressing on his debut at Everton last weekend before coming off the bench in midweek against Galatasaray. Ten Hag stated he is most impressed with the 18-year-old’s scanning ability.

“His scanning, it looks like he always has time because he is scanning, he is running free, he is scanning to see the options and make the right decisions. [He] can delay, can speed up, he makes the right decision,” the Dutch tactician said.

United go into this weekend’s round of Premier League fixtures in sixth place, four points off the top four and six points off top spot currently occupied by Arsenal.
