Onana: Ten Hag defends Cameroon goalkeeper despite questionable Man United form

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has backed Andre Onana despite coming under criticism for his form between the sticks.

The Cameroon goalkeeper has received backlash from Red Devils faithful for not living up to expectations since joining this the summer from Inter Milan and has only managed to keep one clean sheet so far.

Some believe Onana has not shown quality like his predecessor David de Gea, which has called into question his ability to be the number one shot stopper at Old Trafford.

He was heavily criticised during United’s narrow 4-3 defeat to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night to which he said after the game that he took responsibility for the result.

“It’s a difficult situation and for me especially because I’m the one who let the team down. But the team was very good; I think it’s because of me that they didn’t win this game,” the 27-year-old said.

Ten Hag, who managed Onana at Ajax, however stated that it was down to the team not playing well as a unit rather one individual player.

“It’s about the team and as a team we haven’t been getting results,” the Dutch manger said ahead of United’s Premier League clash with newly-promoted Burnley on Saturday.

“Individuals haven’t brought the performance you expect and it’s not only one player but more, including the manager.”

Man United sit in 13th place on the Premier League table with six points, winning two games out of five and losing the other three.
