NWSL: Gift Monday scores late winner as Washington Spirit overcome Chicago Stars

MLS: Alhassan Yusuf scores first-ever New England Revolution goal in epic draw

Gift Monday scored the winner for Washington Spirit as they overcame the Chicago Stars 3-2 in NWSL action on Saturday, Afrosport reports.

The Spirit were on the front foot in the 30th minute when Allyson Schlegel put the ball into her own net.

Julia Angela Grosso then levelled for the Stars five minutes later but it was short-lived as Ivory Coast forward Rosemonde Kouassi put the Spirit back in front going into the half time break.

Chicago were able to equalise once again, this time from Samantha Staab in the 53rd minute but Washington had the last say courtesy of substitute Monday, who tapped in from close range after she was nicely set up by the electric Kouassi.

It marked back-to-back games Monday scored in after netting in the 4-3 defeat at Angel City last time out.

It was also her third goal in the NWSL since she joined the Spirit from Spanish Liga F side UD Tenerife in March.

Washington are third in the NWSL standings, one point behind leaders and reigning champions Orlando Pride.
