NWFL: Heartland Queens, Confluence Queens & Adamawa Queens secure wins

The 2022-23 Nigeria Women Football League season continued this midweek with Heartland Queens grabbing their first win of the season away from home by defeating Delta State-based Royal Queens FC at the Sapele Township Stadium in the early kick-off.

Orji Chinwendu’s 40th minute left-footed wonder striker from the edge of the box earned the team from Imo State all three points.

Group A leaders Delta Queens shared the spoils with seven-time winners Rivers Angels in a goalless draw at the University of Port Harcourt Stadium in Rivers State to remain at the top of the standings with 13 points from five games.

At the Old Parade Ground stadium in Abuja, the game between the Naija Ratels and the defending champions Bayelsa Queens played out the second draw of the day with a 1-1 score line.

Juliet Sunday put the away side in front in the 17th minute, but Agama Ziperekefeghe equalised for the Ratels in the 73rd minute to become the outright leader at the top of the scoring chart with her fourth goal of the season.

Nasarawa Amazon suffered a second straight defeat in Group B as they lost 1-0 to Adamawa Queens, who returned to winning ways thanks to an 88th-minute penalty from Ijeoma Obi.

The highest-scoring match of the day came from the Confluence Stadium in Lokoja, with the Confluence Queens coming back from a goal down to hand FC Robo Queens their third defeat of the season.

The tie ended 2-1 in favour of the Kogi-based team as two quick fire goals from Zainab Azeez in the 74th and 80th minutes cancelled out Folashade Ijamilusi’s 55th minute opener, sealing Confluence Queens’ second consecutive win.

In the final game of the week 6, group B leaders Edo Queens lost by a lone goal to the Abia Angels at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium in Benin, Edo State.

The Queens asked all the questions in the first half but Angels’ goalkeeper Etim Sunday kept her team in the tie.

Agams Nkechi’s third goal of the season was the decider in the match as her 57th minute goal sealed all three points for the Ann Chiejine-led side.

The win meant Abia Angels are now second in the group B standings on 10 points, just two points behind their opponent.
