CAF Confederation Cup: Rivers United & 15 others know group stage fate

Rivers United returned to the top of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) standings after beating Niger Tornadoes 1-0 away from home on Monday, Afrosport reports.

Seiyefa Jackson scored the only goal of the game in the 47th minute as Finidi George’s side extended their unbeaten run to eight games.

Rivers United have now amassed 20 points from eight games and are two points ahead of second-placed Remo Stars.

Elsewhere, Mustapha Agba’s 67th minute strike propelled Shooting Stars to a 1-0 win against Katsina United at the Lekan Salami stadium in Ibadan as the Oluyole Warriors moved to 15th place with nine points.

Meanwhile, at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos, newcomers Ikorodu City survived a scare to beat visiting Lobi Stars 4-2 after letting go of a two-goal lead.

The Oga Boys raced to a two-goal advantage in the first half through Salau Yusuf and Emmanuel Solomon in the 2nd and 19th minutes, respectively. However, Lobi, coached by former Super Eagles forward Daniel Amokachi, fought back to tie the game thanks to a brace from Ifeanyi Assurance in first-half stoppage time.

The hosts, who are now unbeaten in their last three games, then turned things around to secure all maximum points with goals from Solomon Alade in the 56th minute and Rivio Ayemwenre in the 58th minute to lift the Lagos-based club out of the relegation zone and into 17th position.

In Monday’s other game, defending champions Enugu Rangers dropped points once again as they were held to a goalless draw by Akwa United at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.

Fildelis Ilechukwu’s side are now eighth in the NPFL standings and are winless in their last three matches, having suffered two defeats and a draw.
