NPFL: Rivers United back on top after beating Kano Pillars

Rivers United returned to the top of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) table after a hard-fought 1-0 win against Kano Pillars on Sunday, Afrosport reports.

Okon Aniekeme’s long-range strike in the 30th minute ultimately proved to be the winner in a game of few chances.

Finidi George-led Rivers United have now amassed 29 points, three better than Remo Stars who dropped to second.

At the Bako Kotangora stadium in Minna, Joseph Godstime and Daniel Papa netted for Niger Tornadoes in their 2-1 triumph over Remo Stars. The Sky Blue Stars’ consolation came through Michael Ibe just before the full-time whistle.

In Lagos, Ikorodu City mauled struggling Akwa United 4-1 to move third on the log, they also extended their unbeaten run to six games.

Tosin Oyedokun broke the deadlock in the third minute to put the Oga Boys ahead, it was his first goal of the NPFL season.

Chijoke Alakwe then restored parity for the visitors in the 36th minute, but Ikorodu City returned with three more goals in the second half.

Emmanuel Solomon, Olatunji Abdul Malik and Ayomide Cole completed the convincing win.


Elsewhere, Katsina United pipped Sunshine Stars 1-0, Shooting Stars beat Abia Warriors 2-0 courtesy goals from Anthony Okachi and Joshua Akpan, while El-Kanemi Warriors were held to a 0-0 draw by Bayelsa United
