Akwa United manager Fatai Osho has bemoaned errors he described as “elementary” in his team’s 5-3 defeat to Bayelsa United in on the opening weekend of the 2023-24 Nigeria Premier Football League.
After multiple delays, the Nigerian top flight finally got under way on Saturday and the game in Yenegoa turned out to be the highest scoring fixture of the day with Robert Mizo scoring a hat-trick for Bayelsa while Alex Jerry and Eyong Ofem netted the others.
For the Promise Keepers, Seyi Oguntayo (brace) and Mohammed Olarenwaju were the goalscorers and Osho blamed the defeat on his team making costly errors that should not have been which needs to be addressed.
“It’s a big shame that we are losing this type of game the way we did. We were in total control and deserved to have come out with all three points but lots of elementary errors on our part cost us the win,” Osho said on the club website.
“At this level of football you can’t make such mistakes because if you do you get punished and that is exactly what happened to us in this game. It’s unbelievable that we scored three goals and didn’t win or get a point out of this game. We have to quickly address all noticeable mistakes so we can come out strong in our next game.”
Akwa United will next host Sporting Lagos at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo. The newly-promoted side will face Gombe United at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Monday afternoon.
