Rivers United maintained their unbeaten start to the season and moved to the top of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) standings after securing a 2-0 win over Shooting Stars on Thursday, Afrosport reports.
After a barren first half, Rivers, coached by former Super Eagles coach, Finidi George, broke the deadlock in the 51st minute through Aniekeme Okon, who sent in a powerful header, to send the fans inside the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium into a frenzy.
Ndifreke Effiong, who came on as a substitute for Timothy Zachariah, scored the second goal for the hosts in the 65th minute to seal the victory and earn their fourth consecutive home win.

With five wins and two draws, Rivers United have now amassed 17 points from seven games in the ongoing 2024-25 NPFL season, two more than Remo Stars in second place.

Meanwhile, Remo suffered their second defeat of the season as they felled 3-1 to Plateau United at the Jos International Stadium.
A brace from Chukwuebuka Anthony and another from Sadiq Adamu gave the hosts a comfortbale 3-0 lead, while Jabbar scored in the 83rd minute to get the Sky Blue Stars a consolation goal as they lost for the second time in three games.

In Thursday’s other results, Lagos-based Ikorodu City forced Heartland FC to a 1-1 draw in Owerri; Bendel Insurance thrashed Bayelsa United 3-0, while Katsina United pipped Akwa United 1-0 to end matchday seven round of games in the NPFL.
