NPFL: Kwara Utd, Remo Stars & Bendel Insurance secure wins

U17 AFCON: Ugbade confident of Nigeria’s chances after group stage draw

After receiving a two-game ultimatum from the management of Kwara United, coach Audu Mohammed registered his first win of the season by defeating Akwa United 2-1 at the Lekan Salami Stadium on Wednesday.

Wasiu Alalade put the Afonja Warriors ahead with a ferocious strike from the edge of the box in the 15th minute.

Cyril Olisema drew the away team level with his 69th minute effort, but Kwara United were determined to get all three points as Ahmed Jimoh tucked in the winner late in the game after a goalmouth scramble.

In Ikene, Remo Stars bounced back from their shocking 3-0 loss to Bendel Insurance to hand eight-time league winners Enyimba their second defeat of the season.

Attacking midfielder Samuel Anakwe got the only goal of the game after he reacted quickest to tap in a deflected shot.

His goal came after just 17 seconds, and it is the fastest goal scored in the league this season.

Monday Odigie’s Bendel Insurance continue to perform beyond expectation, as their 1-0 victory over El-Kanemi Warriors was their fifth in as many games.

Although the Warriors defence had all the answers for the red-hot attacking duo of Osarenkhoe Imade and Ismael Sarki, it was Deputy Echeta’s solo goal that did the trick as Bendel won their third away game of the season, the most of any side in the league so far.

They are top of Group A in the abridged league format with 15 points and are yet to concede a goal away from home while keeping cleansheets in four of their five games so far.

In other results, Plateau United won their first away game of the season with a 2-1 scoreline against Nasarawa United.

Ibrahim Yuga put Plateau in front with his 50th career NPFL goal, but Nasarawa’s King Osanga drew the home side level before halftime.

Defender Emmanuel Ifeanyi’s thirst for goals continues, as his fourth of the season secured maximum points for the 2017 league champions.

Two set-piece goals from left back Ebube Duru ensured Rivers United maintained their unbeaten start to the season as they defeated Wikki Tourists 2-0 at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.
Duru hit a 30-yard free kick in the first half to put the <span;>defending champions<span;> ahead before doubling his tally from 12 yards with a well-taken penalty.

Wikki, who are without coach Kabiru Dogo following his resignation earlier this week, are currently bottom of Group B, winless in five games with four losses and a draw, while Rivers top the group with a point above Lobi Stars.
