NPFL: Akwa United, Enyimba, Plateau United win big in matchday 8

Akwa United defeated Gombe United 1-0 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Thursday in the last game of matchday 8.

Uche Collins got the only goal of the game with a brilliant header off a cross from James Ajako in the 8th minute. The striker got his second goal for Akwa since joining from Sokoto United in the summer.

The Promise Keepers leapfrogged Remo and moved into fourth place in Group A with their win against the Savannah Scorpions.

On Wednesday, the People’s Elephants of Enyimba made it three wins from three games with a 2-0 home win against Shooting Stars at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba.

The sizzling-hot Chukwuemeka Obioma got a brace to extend his tally to seven for the season, and equalled his goal count for the whole of last season.

The forward put Enyimba ahead with a fantastic header in the second minute before adding a second in first-half stoppage time.

The win helps the Aba-based team maintain the second spot in the Group A standings, while the Oluyole Warriors stay sixth and are winless in their last two games.

At the New Jos Stadium, Plateau United saw off the El-Kanemi Warriors with a comfortable 5-0 victory.

Three first-half goals from Sunday Anthony, Jackson Eru, and Mustapha Ibrahim Yuga put the Peace Boys comfortably ahead.

The second half continued in the same manner as Michael Tochukwu made it four from the penalty spot while Uche Onwuasanya added the fifth with a thumping header.

The win moved them to third place in Group A, level on 14 points with Remo Stars, who played out a goalless draw with Kwara United away from home.

Bendel Insurance also secured a win by handing Nasarawa United a 1-0 defeat at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium to remain atop Group A.

A second-half audacious effort from Ebuka Akobundu helped the Benin Arsenals record their sixth win of the season and remain the only unbeaten team in the league.

Newly-promoted Doma United got back to winning ways after their weekend defeat to Enugu Rangers.

The Tigers were 1-0 winners over the Abia Warriors thanks to a header from No. 10 Usman Musa.

Dakkada FC put an end to their five game losing streak with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Sunshine Stars.

Ejike Uzoechi’s own goal put Dakkada ahead in the 71st minute, but the visitors replied almost immediately with a header from defender Ekerette Udom.

After a goal mouth melee from a corner kick, Karim Abdoulaye restored the home side’s lead. The victory was Dakkada’s second of the season, lifting them off the bottom of Group B, just a point above Bayelsa United, who are winless in four games and drew 1-1 with Niger Tornadoes at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium.
