No Osimhen, no Haller as Nigeria & Ivory Coast dominate AFCON 2023 Best XI

AFCON 2023: Troost-Ekong wins Best Player award, Adingra crowned Best Young Player

The Confederation of African Football (CAF), through its Technical Study Group has revealed the best XI players at the just-concluded 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. 

The squad is dominated by Nigeria and Ivory Coast who have three players each as Equatorial Guinea’s Emilio Nsue also made the cut as the tournament’s top goalscorer with five goals. 

Reigning African Footballer of the Year, Victor Osimhen who played in all of Nigeria’s games in Ivory Coast was a notable omission alongside Borussia Dortmund’s Sebastien Haller who scored decisive goals in the semi-final and final matches for Ivory Coast.

William Troost-Ekong, Ola Aina and Ademola Lookman are the Super Eagles players in the selection while Ivory Coast is represented by Ghislan Konan, Jean Michael Seri and Franck Kessie.

South Africa’s Ronwen Williams gets the nod to be in the goal post after claiming the Golden Glove for his fine displays between the stocks while Teboho Mokoena also got a spot in the midfield.

Democratic Republic of Congo duo Yoane Wissa and captain Chancel Mbmeba complete the squad that has 40-year-old Emerse Fae as the head coach.
