Nigeria targets medal haul in 2023 African Wrestling Championships

Team Nigeria will seek to prevail by winning medals at the African Wrestling Championships which goes down in the tourist town of Hammamet in Tunisia.

The team will be led by world number two women wrestler and Olympic gold medalist Blessing Oborodudu who is out to claim a record 13th African title. Her appearance in North Africa would be the first since 2022 when she participated in the World Championships which she fell short of winning a medal.

Odunayo Adekuoroye, champion of the 59-kilogram weight class and three-time world medalist misses out from the list as she is yet to feature in the competition since she emerged victorious at the Islamic Solidarity Games in August 2022.

Her siblings, Mercy Adekuoroye sets sight on consecutive medal wins after succeeding in the 53-kilogram weight class in 2022 while Jumoke Adekuoroye returns to the competition in the 55-kilogram weight class.

Host nation, Tunisia will bid to claim a team title in front of their compatriots as they to replicate the successful performance in El Jadida last year where they the title with 179 points over Nigeria who finished with 170 points.

Rio Olympics bronze medalist Marwa Amri will be at the forefront, leading youngsters Zaineb Sghaier at 72-kilograms and Khadija Jlassi at 65-kilograms. The absence of defending champ at 50-kilograms Sarra Hamdi may hurt the hosts Siwar Bouseta at 59-kilograms will also be a big medal hope.

The Championships began on Monday, May 15th and will conclude on Friday, May 19th, 2023.
