Nigeria footballer Collins escapes war-plagued Sudan in his shorts

Nigeria football player Charles Collins was among the over 300 Nigerian evacuees that arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport over the weekend after war broke out in Sudan in April.

Charles plies his trade in the Sudanese Premier League with Haidob en Nahud but he had to leave his properties behind in Khartoum for safety in shorts and his blanket.

The 28-year-old, prior to the violence, was enjoying his first top-flight action in Sudan with Haidob en Nahud sitting fourth in the league table and just three points from the CAF Confederation Cup qualifying spot.

“I am coming back home with just this, just my blanket,” Collins told BBC while showing his black backpack. “I ran out of my house wearing just shorts, it was a terrible experience.

“There are many who came back with nothing. At least I came back with a blanket. A man came back with just his food.”

Collins hinted that the war will put an end to his Sudanese adventure that started in 2020 after leaving Mauritius club Richie Moore Rovers.

He disclosed the loss of $20,000 cash and the business he runs (sale of imported hair extensions).
