Newcastle United have reached an agreement with Southampton to sign goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale on a season-long loan deal, Afrosport reports.
The Magpies opened talks with the Saints on Monday after missing out on signing James Trafford from Burnley despite agreeing a £27 million fee with the Clarets. The 22-year-old, however, has signed a five-year deal to return to Manchester City.
Meanwhile, Ramsdale has been granted the permission to travel to Tyneside for a medical and finalise the move after both clubs agreed to terms late on Tuesday.
Newcastle will reportedly pay a “sizeable” loan fee to Southampton, with the deal including an option to buy.
The 27-year-old joined the Saints from Arsenal last summer in a deal worth £25 million. He made 32 appearances in the Premier League last season as Southampton failed to beat the drop and were relegated to the Championship.
Ramsdale has played 183 games in England’s top division and his imminent move to Newcastle will see him join his fifth Premier League club after stints with Bournemouth, Sheffield United and Arsenal.
The England international will become the second signing through the door at St. James Park this summer after Swedish forward Anthony Elanga.
