NBBF appoints former player Rena Wakama as D’Tigress head coach

The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has appointed former player Rena Wakama as head coach of the national women’s team, the D’Tigress.

Wakama succeeds Otis Hughley after the NBBF confirmed she has signed a two-year contract to lead the five-time Afrobasket champions.

Wakama, born in Rivers State, currently works as assistant coach at Stony Brooks University in the United States of America.

The former Nigeria international is a graduate of Therapeutic Recreation from Western Carolina and holds an MBA from Manhattan.

D’Tigress are reigning African champions having successfully defended their continental crown in 2017, 2019 and 2021.

Wakama’s first task will be to rebuild the Nigeria women’s basketball team after their shocking withdrawal from the 2022 FIBA Women’s World Cup due to administrative issues.

Her first competitive challenge will be the 2023 Women’s Afrobasket scheduled for Rwanda between July 28 and August 6. D’Tigress are in Group D of the tournament with Egypt and Democratic Republic of Congo.
