NBA: SGA, Young named Players of the Week for Week 20

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (SGA) and Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young have been named the NBA Players of the Week for Week 20 of the 2024-25 season, Afrosport reports.

SGA has been named the Western Conference Player of the Week for the second time this season and the fourth time in his NBA career. He led OKC to a 4-0 week, averaging 44.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 6.7 assists, and 1.3 blocks per game in the week under review covering 2 March – 9 March.

The 26-year-old, who is the frontrunner for the league’s MVP award this season, helped the Thunder to victories over the Houston Rockets, Memphis Grizzlies, and Denver Nuggets, having missed their win against the Portland Trail Blazers. Across 63 games this season, he is averaging a league-best 32.7 points as well as 5.1 rebounds and 6.2 assists, shooting 52.5% from the floor and 37.3% on 3-pointers.

The three-time All-Star fended off competition from Stephen Curry (Warriors), Luka Doncic and LeBron James (Lakers), James Harden and Ivica Zubac (Clippers), Nikola Jokic (Nuggets), Julius Randle (Timberwolves), and Desmond Bane and Ja Morant (Grizzlies).

Young, meanwhile, wins the Eastern Conference Player of the Week honour for the first time this season and the eighth time in his career, having led the Hawks to a 3-1 record in the week.

The four-time NBA All-Star averaged 24.5 points, 13.0 assists, and 96.7% from the free throw line as they defeated the Memphis Grizzlies and Indiana Pacers twice.

He is currently averaging 23.8 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 11.5 assists per game while shooting 40.4% from the floor across 60 games this season.

Brunson held off the likes of Giannis Antetokounmpo (Bucks), Paolo Banchero (Magic), Cade Cunningham (Pistons), Josh Giddey and Coby White (Bulls), Donovan Mitchell (Cavs), and Jayson Tatum (Celtics) to win the weekly award.
