NBA: Russell Westbrook set for first Clippers training

Nine-time NBA All-Star Russell Westbrook is set to attend his first training session later today since he signed with the Los Angeles Clippers after clearing waivers on Wednesday.

The former Los Angeles Lakers guard was waived by the Utah Jazz earlier this week after joining the Western Conference outfit in a three-team trade involving the Lakers, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Jazz on February 9.

Westbrook cleared waivers because no other team had the available salary capacity space to accommodate the remaining $47 million he was owed on his expiring contract.

According to reports within the league, the 34-year-old has an outside chance of participating in practice with the Clippers if he passes all necessary tests.

Westbrook, who was drafted by the Oklahoma City Thunder with the 4th overall pick in the 2008 draft, is from Los Angeles, and he attended college at the University of California. He played less than two seasons for the Lakers, enduring a very difficult spell that resulted in his coming off the bench this season.

He reunites with former Thunder teammate Paul George and is set to form a “big three” with George and two-time champion Kawhi Leonard.

The 15-year veteran is averaging 15.9 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 7.1 assists in 28.7 minutes per game.

The Clippers, fourth in the Western Conference with a record of 33 wins and 28 losses this season, host the impressive Sacramento Kings at the Crypto.com Arena on Friday in their first game after the All-Star break.
