The Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday were fined $100,000 by the NBA for tor the franchises public statement on the health status of center Joel Embiid, Afrosport reports.
The league confirmed that Embiid is dealing with a “left knee condition” that is currently preventing him from playing but comments from Sixers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey and head coach Nick Nurse were inconsistent with the nature of Embiid’s health status.
The NBA added that the public statements are in violation of league rules, but Embiid, who has yet to feature for Philadelphia this season, has not violated the league’s Player Participation Policy.
Sources said the NBA’s investigation showed that the Sixers did not violate player participation policy with Embiid’s missed games, but in fact with the public comments that did not properly reflect his health issues with his knee. https://t.co/8HrLPpCVfv

Embiid had knee surgery in February and missed a large portion of the 2023-24 regular season. He, however, returned to action in the playoffs, wearing knee braces, before representing the United States at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where he won a gold medal.
The Sixers have a 1-2 record this season following an overtime win over the Indiana Pacers having opened the season with two losses against the Milwaukee Bucks and Toronto Raptors.
