NBA: Pelicans’ Murphy III out for rest of season with torn labrum

The New Orleans Pelicans will be without forward Trey Murphy III for the remainder of the season due to a shoulder injury, Afrosport reports.

Murphy III sustained the injury during Monday’s 127-81 home loss to the Detroit Pistons, and an MRI scan has confirmed a torn labrum and a partial tear of his rotator cuff in his right shoulder.

The 24-year-old picked up the injury after dislocating his right shoulder in the first quarter at the Smoothie King Center, with the Pelicans revealing that “further updates will be appropriately provided”.

In a season riddled with injuries for New Orleans, he has been a bright spark, with career-best averages in points, rebounds, assists, and steals.

The four-year NBA star averaged 21.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.1 steals, shooting 45.4% from the floor and 36.1% on 3-pointers across 53 games this season.

The Pelicans (18-51) are 14th in the Western Conference standings with 13 more regular season games and have long been out of playoff contention. They are on the road in their next three games, including a double-header against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
