NBA: Mavericks, Washington agree four-year, $90M extension

The Dallas Mavericks and forward P.J. Washington have agreed to a four-year contract extension worth $90 million, Afrosport reports.

The 27-year-old had a year left on his previous deal worth $14.1 million, but the extension keeps him in Dallas through the 2029-30 season.

The deal, which was the maximum Washington could sign, keeps him away from free agency in 2026, as he is ineligible to be traded during the 2025-26 campaign. His extension follows the new deals for All-Star guard Kyrie Irving and center Daniel Gafford.

Washington spent his first 4½ seasons in the NBA with the Charlotte Hornets after being the No. 12 pick in the 2019 draft.

Drafted 12th overall out of Kentucky in 2019, Washington spent his first four and a half years in the NBA with the Charlotte Hornets. However, he joined the Mavericks in a deadline trade in February 2024 and played a major role in their Finals run that season—starting all their 22 playoff games.

In 2024-25, his first full season in Dallas, Washington averaged 14.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.1 blocks, and 1.1 steals in 32.2 minutes per game across 57 contests. He shot 45.3% from the field and was 38.1% from the 3-point line.

Washington’s extension ensures Dallas keeps their core as they look ahead to integrating number one overall pick Cooper Flagg into the team. The Mavericks now boast arguably the best frontcourt in the NBA, with Washington and Flagg joining Gafford, Anthony Davis, and Dereck Lively II.
