NBA and FIBA in talks to create joint basketball tournament

The National Basketball Association (NBA), alongside the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), the head organisation that governs European basketball are in talks over a new tournament that will see teams from the NBA take on local teams from FIBA.

The plans for the tournament are still in the early stages but basketball fans across Europe and America are excited about what this new tournament might bring.

The NBA has seen a lot of stars come from the FIBA, like three-time Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic and FIBA will be looking to use this opportunity to expand their reach and visibility to more than just Europe and break through the American basketball landscape.

NBA commissioner, Adam Silver in an interview, said: “There is no specific plan right now about Europe, other than we’re agreeing to look intensively at the opportunity,”

Meanwhile, FIBA Secretary, Andrea Zagklis, has met with the NBA board to discuss on the possibility of this tournament. Possible sponsorship and involvement from the gulf states and the unfavourable economic conditions of the teams participating in the EuroLeague is another reason why there are a lot of eyes on the possibilities of this tournament.

The tournament will feature teams that are already in the EuroLeague and the intervention of the NBA will help mitigate the financial problems that the FIBA teams are facing.
