The National Basketball Association (NBA) has made an adjustment to Gregg Popovich’s career record as coach of the San Antonio Spurs following the conclusion of the 2024-25 season, Afrosport reports.
Popovich, who holds the record for the most wins as a coach in league history, missed 77 games last season due to illness and the NBA has credited Mitch Johnson with the wins and losses during that stretch.
His new career record now stands at 1,390-824, the initial numbers as at 2 November, the day the Hall of Fame coach had a stroke at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, leading to Johnson, one of his assistant coaches, taking over.
Johnson oversaw the remaining 77 games from the sidelines, holding a record of 32-45 as Popovich continued his rehabilitation. The 38-year-old has now been confirmed as Spurs’ head coach following Popovich’s retirement and both the organisation and the NBA agreed on awarding Johnson with the numbers from the games he managed.
Popovich, 76, remains within the organisation as president and despite the adjustment, holds the record as the winningest coach in NBA history, with 53 wins over Don Nelson (1,335).
