MotoGP: South Africa’s Binder finishes impressive third at British Grand Prix

Brad Binder put in a superb performance to finish third at the MotoGP British Grand Prix on Sunday behind Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro and Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia.

The South African and KTM rider started the race in 10th and was able to charge his way up the grid thanks to rain descending on the famous Silverstone track which added extra spice to the race.

Espargaro also started from 12th on the grid and was able to pass championship leader Bagnaia in superb style on the final lap.

Binder at some point was second but he faced a fierce battle with Miguel Oliveira who was fast-charging as well. The Portuguese rider was able to overtake Binder at some stage but the 27-year-old South African got back ahead of him to take the final podium spot while Oliveira settled for fourth place.

Binder stated that he was targeting his third career victory in the premier class and first of the season but was still content with the final podium place nonetheless.

“Really tricky, and very sketchy at the end!,” Binder said after the race. “This track is so big and covers so much space that it was wet in some sectors and dry in others: it was hard to understand how much I could push!

“Hats off to the team; they did an amazing job and the bike was fantastic, I wanted the win for them today but third will have to do. Days like this are awesome for a podium finish just because of how difficult it was.”

The other Aprilia of Maverick Vinales finished fifth while Jorge Martin, Luca Marini and the other KTM of Jack Miller crossed the chequered flag in sixth, seventh and eighth respectively. Raul Fernandez and Johann Zarco took home ninth and 10th place.

The remaining points places were taken by Augusto Fernandez (11th), Pol Espargaro (12th), Fabio Di Giannantonio (13th), Franco Morbidelli (14th) and Fabio Quartararo (15th).

Binder remains in fourth place in the world championship, 83 points behind leader Bagnaia while Martin and Marco Bezzecch are second and third respectively.

The next round of Racing heads to the Red Bull Ring for Austrian Grand Prix in a fortnight.
