MotoGP: Injured champion Jorge Martin eyeing Qatar GP return

Reigning MotoGP champion Jorge Martin could make his debut for Aprilia at the Qatar Grand Prix this weekend if he passes a medical check, the team revealed on Tuesday.

Martin, who rode with Ducati last season, has been sidelined with injuries, having sustained multiple fractures from a crash during pre-season testing. The Spaniard required surgery, which has kept him out of the first three races of the season.

“I have a great desire to be back on the track and I’m happy to at least be able to try and race in Qatar,” Martin said in a statement.

“Physically, I’m not even sure I’ll be able to finish the race, but if we can manage, it will be a victory because that will mean that I’m beginning to recover.

“We need to take one step at a time to try and get back to our normal level as soon as possible.”

With Martin out, his compatriot Alex Marquez leads in the standings, having finished in second place in the first three races of the season. Alex, however, is followed closely by his brother, Marc, who occupies the second spot despite winning two of the three opening races.

The Qatar GP, held at the Lusail International Circuit, will take place on Sunday, 13 April, with Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia winning the race in 2024.
