Two-time Olympic champion Soufiane El Bakkali on Friday won the men’s 3000-metre steeplechase event at the Monaco Diamond League, Afrosport reports.
The Moroccan, a two-time world champion, was tested to the limit but was resolute enough to seal the win,
The 29-year-old reached another gear in the final 50m at Stade Louis II, winning the race in 8:03.18.
El Bakkali held off Japan’s Ryuji Miura, who finished second in a National Record of 8:03.43, while Kenyan Edmund Serem clocked a personal best of 8:04.00 to finish in third place.
Meanwhile, Yomif Kejelcha of Ethiopia was also unstoppable in the men’s 5000m, clocking a time of 12:49.46 to win in Monaco.
The 27-year-old beat home favourite Jimmy Gressier of France, who ran 12:53.36 to finish second, while Bahrain’s Birhanu Balew finished third in 12:53.51.
