Morocco secure historic World Cup qualification with Canada win

Morocco have qualified for the round of 16 of the 2022 FIFA World Cup after securing top spot in Group F with a 2-1 win over Canada.

Goals from Hakim Ziyech and Youssef En-Nesyri helped the Atlas Lions become the first African country to lead a group in the quadrennial tournament since Nigeria’s feat in 1998.

Morocco finished as group leaders with seven points after three matches, two points ahead of second-placed Croatia who held Belgium to a goalless draw while Canada languish at the bottom.

Walid Regragui’s side are hoping to surpass the country’s best outing at the FIFA World Cup since they reached the round of 16 in the 1986 edition.

They will face the second-placed in Group E.
