Morocco coach Walid Regragui has confirmed ongoing talks with AC Milan star Brahim Diaz over switching his international allegiance.
Born to a Moroccan father and a Spanish mother in Spain, Diaz played for the Spanish national team in an international friendly game against Lithuania in June 2021 but he is eligible to feature for Morocco.
After announcing his 30-man squad for the upcoming international friendly fixtures against Brazil and Peru later this month, Regragui said the 23-year-old who has four Serie A goals this season has the decision to make.
“I travelled to Milan to meet Brahim Diaz. He has dual nationality,” he said.
“We had a sincere discussion, he was honest. We are not in the negotiation. There is a cooling-off period between us and Spain. He loves Morocco but it will be his decision.”
The Atlas Lions of Morocco are not in action for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers this month following the disqualification of Zimbabwe from Group K due to the government’s interference in the country’s football activities.
