Moffi scores twice for OGC Nice in draw against Basel

Nice coach Digard pleased with Moffi’s consistency

Terem Moffi found the back of the net on two occasions for OGC Nice but it was not enough as they drew 2-2 with FC Basel in the UEFA Europa Conference League quarter-final first leg on Thursday night.

Les Aiglons were victorious over FC Sheriff of Moldova in the previous round with Moffi scoring and and providing an assist in the 3-1 second leg win.

The Nigeria international was at it again at St. Jakob Park on Thursday, first netting in the 38th minute from a lose ball that fell into his path after Basel had taken the lead in the 26th minute via Zeki Amdouni’s penalty.

Moffi then put Nice ahead 2-1 before the halftime break with an audacious bicycle kick. The French outfit could however not hold on to a likely away win as Amdouni equalised for Basel in the 71st minute.

Moffi has now scored seven goals since joining Nice on loan from Lorient in January, including three in three games in the Europa Conference League. He has scored a total of 19 goals in all competitions for both clubs this season.

In the Europa League quarter-finals first leg, another Nigerian in Victor Boniface also found the back of the net as Union St. Gilloise were held to a 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen in Germany.

Boniface gave the Belgian side the lead in the 51st minute with a deft finish from a Teddy Teuma pass. Les Unionistes were however denied a big win in Leverkusen as Florian Wirtz equalised for the pharmaceutical-run club with eight minutes of regular time left.

Boniface’s strike was his 20th of the season and sixth in the Europa League which puts him at the top of scorers charts in the competition alongside Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford.
