Mbeumo & Wissa masterclass seals historic Brenford win over Tottenham

It was the Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa show as Brentford sealed a 3-1 comeback win over London rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday afternoon.

The African duo were rampant, posing countless problems for Ryan Mason’s side all through the early kickoff tie at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Cameroon international Mbeumo got a brace and an assist, while Congo’s Wissa got one goal and an assist to help the Bees to their fourteenth win of the season, their most in a top-flight season for 85 years.

English forward Harry Kane got the home side in front in the 8th minute with a sizzling strike from an indirect freekick for his 28th goal in the Premier League and his 30th in all competition this season.

Spurs looked really sharp from the start and could have almost doubled their lead through Son Heung-min. Kane played the South Korean forward through on goal, but his left-footed effort was saved by David Raya. Brazilian full back Emerson Royal also came close to doubling the home side’s lead in the 23rd minute, but his goal-bound header was cleared off the line by opposing full back Nico Henry to keep the score at 1-0.

The second half, however, began differently for the away side, as Mbeumo drew his side level just five minutes after the restart. The 23-year-old was played in by strike partner Wissa before stroking a left-footed strike into the bottom corner.

The Cameroonian completed Brentford’s turnaround two minutes after the hour mark. After Kane was dispossessed, Aaron Hickey played Mbeumo once, and the forward kept his cool to slot the ball calmly into the corner once again, almost as identically as the first goal.

Thomas Frank’s side added a third on the 88th minute mark with a left-footed strike from inside the box past Fraser Forster in goal for Tottenham. Oliver Skipp was caught on the ball at the edge of the box by Shandon Baptiste, who played a short pass to Mbeumo, who in turn fed Wissa with a well-weighted pass.

Despite Tottenham’s last barrage of attack to try and salvage the game, two breathtaking saves from Raya and well-timed blocks from former Burnley defender Ben Mee kept the North Londoners at bay as Brentford cruised to their first win over Spurs since 1948.

Mbeumo now has nine goals and seven assists in the Premier League this season, while Wissa is now on seven goals and three assists, as the duo made the absence of leading scorer Ivan Toney, who received an eight-month suspension from the FA, unnoticed.

Tottenham, who lost their first home game after leading at halftime since 2021, remain seventh in the standings with 57 points, while the Bees are two places behind on 56 points.
